Aiken Public School District held the first of two town halls on a proposed modified academic calendar for next year, opening the floor at North Augusta High School Wednesday to some 50 people, many of whom questioned why the district would pursue such a change while coming off two years of upheaval due to the coronavirus pandemic.

A designated School Resource Officer will be assigned to each of the two public middle schools in North Augusta at least through end of this school year now that the city has accepted a state grant that will ensure both Paul Knox and North Augusta Middle School have their own officer.

In accepting a $2.45 million federal grant Monday, the city of North Augusta moved forward with initiating a fix to what officials called “significant” erosion now threatening infrastructure and downstream properties in the upper reaches of the Pole Branch watershed.

North Augusta city council members gave final authorization Monday to upgrade the communications equipment at North Augusta Public Safety, signing off on a nearly million-dollar purchase that will be funded primarily through Emergency 911 fees and that will outfit the department with new radios.

Aiken County stands to gain a state park just outside of North Augusta thanks to the legal settlement reached this summer between Dominion Energy and the South Carolina Department of Revenue. 

Nearly five dozen people filled the gallery at North Augusta City Hall Thursday evening when the city’s planning commission was scheduled to hear a concept plan for the redevelopment of a centrally-located bit of land in North Augusta that backs onto the Greeneway and overlooks a long-standing residential neighborhood.
