North Charleston police placed Officer Brandon Allen on unpaid leave Monday following his arrest on an assault charge — his second run-in with police this year, authorities said.
In the latest incident, the 30-year-old officer is accused of punching a man in the nose during a confrontation on Saturday at Southside 17 Bar and Grill, 3632 Savannah Highway on Johns Island. Brandon Claypool, 36, was left with a wound that required five stitches to close, according to an arrest affidavit.
Allen turned himself in to Charleston County sheriff's deputies on Monday and was charged with third-degree assault and battery. Magistrate Linda Lombard set bail at $1,092.
Mark Peper, Allen's attorney, said the other man involved in the incident is the boyfriend of Allen's estranged wife, whom he is in the process of divorcing.
Allen admits he was in an argument with his wife's paramour, Peper said, but he plans to fight the assault charge "on the grounds of provocation and self-defense."
Allen also was arrested by Charleston police in June on a charge of criminal domestic violence, court records show. Peper said that charge was later dismissed.
North Charleston police spokesman Spencer Pryor said Allen was placed on leave during that incident and has placed on unpaid leave again Monday following his arrest. He will remain on leave pending the outcome of the case, he said.
