SAND HILL -- The first two of six workshops on zoning rural Dorchester County take place Monday and Tuesday.

A meeting will be held 6-8 p.m. Monday at the Sand Hill United Methodist Church Life Center, 1961 Summers Drive, in the Clubhouse community.

It will be followed Tuesday by a 6-8 p.m. meeting at Givhans Alternative School on S.C. Highway 61 just north of U.S. Highway 17 Alternate.

Meetings will be held in the upper county later this month.

County officials are working to replace a broad "absence of zoning" category that covers much of the unincorporated county with specific zonings that regulate how land is used in various parts of the county.

At the meetings, residents and property owners can look over maps of what's proposed for their properties and communities, ask questions and comment on the proposed changes.

Meetings also will be held Jan. 23 at Woodland High School in Dorchester; Jan. 30 at Harleyville-Ridgeville Elementary School; and Jan. 31 at Reevesville Baptist Church.

For more information, call 832-0020 or click "Government," "Departments" and then "Planning & Zoning" at www.dorchestercounty.net.

The proposed rezoning will be voted on by the county planning commission in February and then the County Council in the spring.
