JOHNS ISLAND -- Two women and a girl were hit by a car Sunday night while walking from a wake at the St. Matthews AME Church on Main Road.

One of the walkers suffered life-threatening injuries during the 8:40 p.m. incident, Charleston County sheriff Maj. John Clark said. All three were taken to the Medical University Hospital.

Mary Ella Pinckney, 55, of Johns Island was in critical condition Monday, a hospital spokeswoman said. Ruby Prioleau, 52, of Wadmalaw Island, and Makayla McCollin, 13, of Johns Island, were both in good condition.

Clark said four people were walking single-file along the side of Main Road, toward Maybank Highway, when a car struck three of them.

The driver was identified as Simone Barron-Celina of Wadmalaw.

No charges are pending at this time, Clark said

The case remains under investigation.
