PARKERS FERRY -- A woman was found dead lying on the side of a rural dirt road in Charleston County on Monday morning.

Sheriff Al Cannon said workers traveling down Old Jacksonboro Road found the body of a white female about 7:30 a.m., about a block from S.C. Highway 174.

The woman appears to be in her 20s or 30s, Cannon said. The cause of death was not immediately determined, he said.

"It is obviously going to be foul play," Cannon said.

Neighbors said they didn't see or hear anything until deputies arrived at the rural neighborhood Monday morning.

Sheriff's Maj. John Clark said evidence at the crime scene led investigators to conclude that the woman did not die a natural death, but he would not be more specific about that evidence until the coroner's office had a chance to autopsy the body and determine the cause of death.

"From what we saw, and the evidence we were able to get, we were able to determine that there was foul play," Clark said.

County Coroner Rae Wooten said later Monday that investigators still were trying to identify the victim.
