EUTAWVILLE — A 98-year-old South Carolina woman who had been missing for 16 hours was found dead in a pond near her home.

The body of Henrietta Ellis of Eutawville was found shortly before 3 p.m. Tuesday less than a half-mile from her home.

The Times and Democrat of Orangeburg reported that Ellis had been reported missing about 11 p.m. Monday. Temperatures dropped to 25 degrees early Tuesday.

More than 50 people were involved in the search.

The woman's grandson and caretaker, Wise Roseboro, said he returned home about 10:20 p.m. Monday and Ellis had answered a phone call and gave it to him.

Roseboro said he spoke with an aunt for a few minutes, and Ellis was missing when he ended the call.

K-9 units and a State Law Enforcement Division helicopter with heat-sensing capabilities helped in the search.
