A woman was fatally stabbed Sunday in North Charleston, becoming the city's fourth homicide victim in 2018.

The slaying was reported before 6 p.m. in Ashton Woods apartments at 9525 U.S. Highway 78, an area in the city's northern reaches near Ladson. North Charleston Police Department spokesman Spencer Pryor said responding officers found the woman dead of stab wounds.

A suspect, described by Pryor as "estranged" from the victim, was found nearby and arrested. The exact nature of their relationship wasn't clear, Pryor said.

The suspect was not immediately identified.

The stabbing was the 15th slaying in the tri-county area this year, according to The Post and Courier's homicide database.
