SUMMERVILLE — A 28-year-old woman died in a fire at her rural Berkeley County home early Monday morning.
The body of Jochosia Quarles was found on the floor of her bedroom of her house at 109 Peaceful Lane after midnight, Berkeley County Chief Deputy Coroner Bill Salisbury said. Preliminary results from an autopsy Monday indicate that she died as a result of the fire, Salisbury said.
The house was destroyed. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
The Pine Ridge Volunteer Fire Department extinguished the fire.
Quarles had two children, both under the age of 10, according to James W. Lewis, Sr., volunteer chaplain for all of the volunteer fire departments in Berkeley County.
Salisbury said Quarles and her husband had gone out for the evening and returned home. Lewis said her husband went to visit a cousin and was on his way home when he received a call that his house was on fire. Lewis said the children were either with other family members or staying the night at a friend’s at the time of the fire.
Salisbury said the State Law Enforcement Division’s arson investigation team has been called in to investigate the fire with the Berkeley County Sheriff’s office and the coroner’s office because it was fatal.
