The good news is the Lowcountry will see almost $2 million in new sidewalk and bike path work during the next few years.
The bad news is that area cities, towns and counties are seeking at least twice that much money.
A special subcommittee of the Charleston Area Transportation Study (CHATS) committee will meet Dec. 13 to pick the winners and losers. The CHATS committee will make the final call as early as next month.
The $1.9 million is federal transportation money that by law must be spent on projects other than road-building, such as bike trails, sidewalks and landscaping work.
The committee will evaluate the projects based on aesthetics, transportation function, the number of people served, social equity and other considerations, said Jessica Gillis, a planner with the Berkeley- Charleston-Dorchester Council of Governments.
The 11 projects include a $400,000 request from Berkeley County and the city of Charleston toward a $509,497 project to build a pedestrian connection from Daniel Island across St.
Thomas Island to Clements Ferry Road.
Summerville and Dorchester County hope to get $811,336 toward $1.01 million to extend the Sawmill Branch Canal Trail.
Local governments have applied for nine other projects, seeking a total of $4.24 million, but only $1.9 million will be awarded for the next three years, Gillis said.
Any requests above $400,000 must show regional significance, and local governments are asked to put up at least 20 percent of the total project cost, she added.
The final decisions could be made next month, with the first checks sent out next year.
