A 15-year-old girl who was struck by a car Friday night in West Ashley died in a hospital Thursday, authorities said.

McKayla Matthews of West Ashley had been in the intensive care unit at Medical University Hospital since about 8 p.m. Friday. She was struck by a car while attempting to cross Glenn McConnell Parkway near Bees Ferry Road, Charleston County Deputy Coroner Dottie Lindsey said.

According to published reports, the teen dropped her cell phone as she was crossing the road and was struck by a vehicle as she bent down to pick it up. Traffic in the area was rerouted for several hours as police conducted an investigation.

After having considered statements from witnesses, police do not intend to file any charges against the driver, said Charleston police Cpl. Fred Bowie, a departmental spokesman.
