A 22-year-old West Ashley man was arrested Wednesday after a chase that began on Savannah Highway and wound through North Charleston and back into peninsular Charleston. The chase reached speeds as high as 80 mph.
It began shortly before 11 a.m., when the U.S. Marshals Service Fugitive Task Force got a tip that a man wanted by the Charleston Police Department was at a West Ashley motel. When a Charleston County sheriff’s deputy went to the motel, the suspect saw the deputy and drove away.
The deputy began chasing the suspect. Other officers joined the pursuit, following the suspect on Savage Road, Orleans Road, Sam Rittenberg Boulevard, Cosgrove Avenue and Azalea Drive and King Street. The chase ended when the driver finally came to stop on King Street near Lenox Street about 11:30 a.m.
Kouvarius Recardo Butler, of 1755 Ashley Hall Road, is charged by Charleston police with strong-arm robbery. He is accused of using force to take more than $100 from a man on Sans Souci Street about 9:30 a.m. Monday.
