Three loggerhead turtles and four green turtles will be released into the ocean Saturday after being rehabilitated at the South Carolina Aquarium's sea turtle hospital.

The release will take place at 3:30 p.m. on the beach in front of Isle of Palms County Park, 1 14th Ave. It marks the May 1 beginning of sea turtle nesting season on South Carolina beaches.

The unusual multiple release will make room for new arrivals that are expected now that nesting season has begun.

"It's definitely the single largest release in the program's 10-year history," said Kelly Thorvalson, aquarium turtle rescue coordinator.

The seven will include "Scute," a loggerhead who will be the 50th turtle to be rehabilitated and released, and five turtles cold-stunned in North Carolina last winter. Loggerheads are long-lived sea turtles that grow to the size of a kitchen table. Greens are the largest hard-shelled sea turtles.
