Trooper OK after wreck

Authorities responded to this wreck involving a S.C. Highway Patrol trooper Friday on U.S. Highway 176.

An S.C. Highway Patrol trooper has been released from the hospital after he was involved in a crash while responding to another wreck Friday morning, authorities said.

The first wreck, involving a motorcycle, happened about 7 a.m. at the intersection of U.S. Highway 17A, College Park Road and Old Summerville Road.

One person was airlifted from the scene in critical condition.

The wreck involving the trooper happened about 7:20 a.m. on U.S. 176, about two miles from the first wreck. The trooper had blue lights and siren activated when his cruiser struck a Jeep sport utility vehicle.

“All indications are that traffic was yielding for the marked cruiser when the SUV pulled onto the highway in front of the trooper’s marked cruiser,” according to the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office.

Berkeley County EMS took the trooper to a hospital, and he was later discharged, Highway Patrol Sgt. Bob Beres said.

Information was not available on the condition of the SUV driver.
