Two people were injured and traffic was snarled for seven hours Friday after a tractor-trailer overturned on U.S. Highway 17 in Colleton County, the S.C. Highway Patrol said.

About noon, a Summerville man was driving a 2006 Freightliner north when it ran off the right side of the road, said Lance Cpl. Bob Beres, a Highway Patrol spokesman. The driver overcorrected, causing the truck to overturn, Beres said.

The wreck occurred near Pon Pon Plantation Road, south of Jacksonboro.

The driver, Clifford B. Follinus, 51, is charged with driving too fast for conditions, Beres said.

A passenger in the truck, a 40-year-old woman, was seriously injured and had to be extricated from the vehicle. She was taken by EMS to Medical University Hospital, Beres said.

The driver was taken to Colleton Medical Center. None of their injuries were life-threatening.

The rescue efforts and subsequent work involved in getting the overturned vehicle back on its wheels forced the Highway Patrol to close the highway to traffic from about noon to 7 p.m.
