McCLELLANVILLE -- A man accused of breaking into a home and killing the owner surrendered to Charleston County sheriff's deputies Wednesday.
Troy Lawrence Mason, 21, of North Charleston is charged with murder in the fatal shooting of Melvin Simmons Jr. at 10406 Old Georgetown Road in McClellanville. Mason is being held in the Charleston County Detention Center awaiting a bond hearing.
Authorities said Mason was shot and a second suspect, Curtis Delaney, was killed July 10 after they kicked in the door to Simmons' home and exchanged gunfire with the people inside.
Investigators submitted the blood evidence recovered from the shooting scene and Mason's clothing to the State Law Enforcement Division for DNA analysis.
The test confirmed that the blood from Mason's shirt and the crime scene matched, according to an affidavit.
