Suspect in downtown Charleston homicide turns self in

  • Updated

A 19-year-old wanted in connection with a fatal shooting earlier this week has turned himself in to Charleston police.

Tyrone Council II surrendered Thursday and was charged with murder and possession of a firearm during the commission of a violent crime, police said.

Council is suspected in the shooting death of 19-year-old Charleston resident De'Andre Gregg.

Officers were called to the scene around 6:30 p.m. Monday at Hagood Avenue and Ashton Street where they found friends and relatives applying pressure to Gregg's wounds, police said.

Investigators believe an altercation might have preceded the shooting, said Charles Francis, a police spokesman.

The death is the third homicide within Charleston city limits this year and the fourth in the tri-county area.
