A man accused of assaulting the mother of his child last month and then setting fire to her Romney Street apartment in Charleston has been arrested.
A police officer recognized Michael Demario Jackson during a traffic stop downtown Sunday night and arrested him, said Charles Francis, police public information officer. He said Jackson, 29, of North Charleston is charged with stalking, arson, first-degree burglary and criminal domestic violence of a high and aggravated nature.
Jackson is accused of forcing his way into the woman's home at Bridgeview Apartments on Jan. 16 and punching her.
About four hours later, an arson fire heavily damaged the apartment, and witnesses saw Jackson nearby, police said. No one was injured in the fire.
Jackson remained at the Charleston County Detention Center on Monday night. A magistrate denied him the opportunity to make bond, the jail said.
