SUMMERVILLE -- Fire Chief Marc Melfi recently announced he will retire in November, after helping to turn over the department to a newly hired chief.
Melfi confirmed the retirement this week. A lifelong Summerville firefighter and son of a longtime town firefighter, Melfi started with the department as a volunteer at 17 years old in 1978 and became a full-time firefighter in 1982. He became interim chief in 2005 and was appointed chief the next year.
"He's put in a long and storied career as a firefighter with the town of Summerville," said Mayor Bill Collins. "He's helped a lot of people and he's touched a lot of lives."
