SULLIVAN'S ISLAND -- Two Mount Pleasant siblings were transported to an area hospital Wednesday after having trouble getting to shore from a sandbar where they were stranded, authorities said.

The pair were with a group of at least four people who ventured to a sandbar near Station 25, Police Chief Danny Howard said. They ran into trouble when they tried to return to shore around 3 p.m., he said.

A 17-year-old boy had difficulty swimming back and nearly drowned, Howard said.

Firefighters from Sullivan's Island and Isle of Palms rescued the teen, who was unconscious when he was transported to the hospital, authorities said.

The boy's 22-year-old sister also went to the hospital after inhaling water during the swim, firefighters said.

Authorities have not released the names of the siblings.
