An 18-year-old student was charged with third-degree arson Wednesday after fires were lit in empty boxes in a classroom at West Ashley High School.
Charleston firefighters responded to a fire call at the school at 8:54 a.m., but school officials extinguished the fire before they arrived, department spokesman Mark Ruppel said. He said no injuries or damage were reported.
Malcolm Gerrell Singleton was charged and taken to the Charleston County jail, police spokesman Charles Francis said.
Francis said there were witnesses. "It happened inside of a classroom with other people inside of the classroom," he said.
