An employee of Doscher's grocery store in West Ashley shot a co-worker multiple times Saturday afternoon in the store's break room, police said.

The suspect was taken into custody at the store at 1133 Savannah Highway, said Charles Francis, public information officer for the Charleston Police Department.

Thomas Davis, 25, of Savannah Highway is charged with assault and battery with intent to kill and possession of a firearm during the commission of a violent crime, Francis said.

Davis is accused of shooting Burton Thorne, 17, who also works at the store, at least twice in the upper back about 2:35 p.m., Francis said.

Thorne was taken to Medical University Hospital. Hospital officials did not return a call Saturday night for information on Thorne's condition.

Davis will have a bail hearing today, Francis said.

Detectives still are trying to determine the motive for the shooting, Francis said.

Francis said that because the shooting took place in the employee break room, customers likely were unaware of the incident at the time it occurred.

Store owner John Doscher said Saturday evening that he would not comment on the situation because he didn't yet know what had happened.

He said he will release a statement Monday.
