One of the biggest annual expenses for property owners along the South Carolina coast will get a public airing in Charleston this week.

The S.C. Department of Insurance will host a public information session and field questions about property insurance ahead of the June 1 start of the hurricane season.

The event will be held at The Citadel’s Mark Clark Hall on Thursday from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m.

Weather, insurance and real estate experts are scheduled to give presentations during the information session.

The event comes just weeks after a team of meteorologists from Colorado State University predicted above-average hurricane activity this year.

The April 10 study called for 18 systems, including nine hurricanes in the Atlantic and Caribbean, this year.

The Atlantic hurricane season runs through Nov. 30.

The Insurance Department’s coastal forum coincides with growing complaints about rising rates for homeowners’ insurance and flood policies.

The department said the hearing will be a good time for consumers to compare coverage and prices to determine the best value.
