A St. Stephen man who was shot and killed by a deputy Saturday night has been identified as 23-year-old Jerome Darby, Berkeley County Coroner Bill Salisbury said Sunday.

A Berkeley County Sheriff's deputy was attempting to serve a criminal domestic violence warrant at 1229 Old Mill Road about 10 p.m. Saturday when Darby reached for the deputy's gun and the deputy shot him, according to Sheriff's Office Public Information Officer Dan Moon.

The deputy has not been identified.

The State Law Enforcement Division is investigating the shooting, which is standard procedure in all officer- involved shootings.

Moon said it's up to SLED to release any information on the case, including

the identity of the deputy, and he didn't have any estimate on when that might happen.
