Three finalists have been named for president of South Carolina State University.
The university’s presidential search committee has forwarded the names to the university’s Board of Trustees, the group that ultimately will decide who will be the school’s next leader.
The finalists are Thomas J. Elzey of The Citadel; E. Newton Jackson of the University of North Florida; and Leonard A. McIntyre of South Carolina State.
Notably absent from the list is Cynthia Warrick, the university’s interim president. Warrick had applied for the permanent position and had the support of many students on the Orangeburg campus.
The finalists next week will participate in interviews with the board and meetings with stakeholder groups. The board will vote on who will take the reins after those meetings, but a date has not been announced.
Board Chairman Walter Tobin said in a news release that the search committee reviewed applications from 25 candidates, then narrowed the list to seven, from which it selected the three finalists. The final seven applicants were screened by a private agency.
