COLUMBIA — A third person has been arrested in the theft of pit bulls from the Columbia Animal Shelter.

Twenty-five-year-old Dezmon Jones of Denmark turned himself in to authorities Tuesday. He’s charged with three counts of second-degree burglary, petit larceny and illegal entry into a building.

A 13-year-old and a 17-year-old were arrested earlier.

Seventeen dogs were recovered from a rural site in Bamberg County. Columbia officials say not all of those dogs were from the city’s shelter.

Dogs were taken on three consecutive weekends from the Columbia shelter.

Police say the teens arrested initially directed officers to Bamberg County.

Bamberg County Sheriff Ed Darnell says the dogs were being prepared for fighting.

Police are looking for one more juvenile.
