AIKEN — A judge has refused to release the video of a traffic stop that led to the shooting death of an Aiken police officer in December.

Circuit Judge Jack Early ruled Thursday after a two-minute hearing that allowing the public to see the video of the traffic stop would keep 19-year-old Stephon Carter from getting a fair trial. Several media outlets requested the video under the state’s Freedom of Information Act.

The judge’s order did not address a December ruling by a different judge that ordered the Highway Patrol to release dashboard camera videos unless the agency could prove it would provide specific harm to an investigation.

Both Carter’s lawyer and prosecutors opposed the release.

Carter is charged with murder in the death of Aiken officer Scotty Richardson.
