Charleston City Council on Tuesday approved allowing short-term rentals in commercially zoned properties but only for the Cannonborough and Elliottborough neighborhoods on the peninsula.
The rules cover properties that would available for renters for between two and 30 days.
Some opponents of the effort said the change is bad for the neighborhoods becausee of the increased competition for parking that the new quarters would require. Advocates said it would allow property owners to fix up under-used space, such as above a business.
As part of the change, council members asked for a report on the frequency of use to be available in about six months.
