Sheriff: Reserve deputy sexually assaulted girls

Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott

COLUMBIA, S.C. — Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott says a reserve deputy sexually assaulted three girls and involved his own 18-year-old son in at least one of the acts.

Lott announced results of his department’s investigation Wednesday.

The sheriff says 43-year-old Michael Collum gave alcohol to a 10-year-old, an 11-year-old and a 15-year-old girl and then sexually assaulted them. Lott says Collum also arranged for his son and two other men to assault the 15-year-old girl.

Lott says the investigation led deputies to charge Collum with two counts of first-degree criminal sexual conduct with a minor, 13 counts of second-degree criminal sexual conduct with a minor and 10 other charges. It wasn’t known if Collum had a lawyer.

Deputies say the other men also face charges.

Lott says there may be more victims.
