Charleston police officers responding to a reported purse snatching Monday were not able to find the alleged robber, but they did nab a man who was allegedly carrying a pound of marijuana.

About 2:15 p.m. Monday, police were sent to Wappoo Road area for a report of an 85-year-old woman having had her purse grabbed from her.

Officers quickly established a perimeter and put out a description of the suspected robber.

Officer Jason Scurry was at the intersection of Opal Avenue and Huntley Drive when he saw a man matching the robbery suspect's description running down Huntley Drive at a full sprint, police spokesman Charles Francis said.

Scurry ordered the man to stop and he did. The officer noticed a strong odor of marijuana coming from the man, and retrieved a pound of marijuana from the man's backpack, Francis said.

He said the marijuana has a street value of almost $2,900.

Emeka Swain, 27, of Skinner Avenue, is charged with possession of marijuana with the intent to distribute. He is being held in the Cannon Detention Center.

Francis said Swain is not a suspect in the purse snatching. That investigation is ongoing, he said.

The robber confronted his victim as she was about to enter her Wappoo Road home, grabbed her purse and ran, Francis said. She described him as black, wearing a blue jacket and blue jeans.
