Since first being elected in 1975, Joe Riley has served the Charleston community with distinction and a true sense of love for his neighbors.
I have had the opportunity to work with him during my 13 years on Charleston County Council and during my time in Congress. As mayor of the Holy City, he has presided over the city’s revitalization and its emergence as an internationally recognized destination to live, work and visit. I appreciate his passion for the people of Charleston and the Lowcountry.
And in June, when our community was robbed of nine precious lives from the Emanuel AME Church congregation, Mayor Riley worked with so many of us to promote healing, reconciliation and forgiveness.
Mayor Riley has been a tireless advocate for all thing Charleston and as he retires, Charleston and the entire Lowcountry applaud his service and stewardship.
