Summerville Police Department

A woman was fatally shot Thursday night at the same Summerville bar where a customer was wounded in gunfire earlier this year.

Gunshots rang out about 11:15 p.m. at Three Cafe as customers scattered into the parking lot, Capt. Cassandra Williams of the Summerville Police Department said.

When officers responded to a call for help at 100 Iris St., they found a man doing CPR on a woman who had been shot. Officers took over, Williams said, but they could not save 25-year-old Cassandra Smalls.

The Summerville resident died at the scene.

The police announced no immediate arrests in the town's first homicide of 2018 and the 18th killing this year in the tri-county area.

Three Cafe bills itself as a seafood restaurant and pub that closes at midnight Sunday through Thursday and at 2 a.m. on weekends.

Customers there also were sent running for cover from bullets that flew after 7 p.m. Jan. 23.

Witnesses said up to eight shots were fired from outside the business. A woman was hit in the shoulder as she sat on a bar stool. She was hospitalized.

It was not clear whether anyone had been arrested in that earlier episode.

Anyone with information about the recent killing is asked to call the police at 843-875-1650 or Crime Stoppers at 843-554-1111.
