FORT MILL — About 200 Army National Guard troops are coming home to the Carolinas for the holidays.

A South Carolina National Guard spokesman says the troops will arrive late Wednesday morning in Fort Mill and Spartanburg. The men and women have been training at Fort McCoy, Wis., for deployment to Afghanistan.

Ten-year-old Brittany Detter of Gastonia, N.C., and her four siblings were waiting at a large tent at a Lowe’s store in Fort Mill. Brittany says it’s been lonely without her dad and would be worse if he wasn’t there for Christmas.

Julie Yenicheck of Lowe’s Home Improvement of Mooresville, N.C., says her firm chipped in $25,000 of the $35,000 cost of bus transportation.

About 100 members will arrive in Fort Mill, while another 100 will go to Spartanburg.

The soldiers return to duty Jan. 1.
