Charleston police have arrested a Georgia man on charges of shooting his wife to death early Christmas morning while the couple were visiting relatives in the downtown area.

Bobby Sloan, 60, of Forest Park, Ga., was charged with murder and possession of a firearm during the commission of a violent crime.

Darlene Sloan, 50, also of Forest Park, near Atlanta, died at the scene after suffering a single gunshot to the head, according to the Charleston County Coroner's Office. She was found in the street near their vehicle.

The shooting occurred about 2 a.m. on Rutledge Avenue. The Sloans started arguing, and Bobby Sloan pulled out a handgun and shot his wife, police said.

Mauri Haynes-Jones, vice president of the West Side Neighborhood Association, was driving home when she encountered the scene. At first, she thought it was a road block but soon realized what had happened.

"I was very saddened to learn about such a tragedy in the neighborhood on Christmas Day," Haynes-Jones said. "My heart goes out the family."

The killing was the 13th in the city of Charleston this year.

Sloan was being held Thursday at the Charleston County Detention Center without bail on the murder charge and $100,000 on the weapons charge. He must request a separate hearing before a circuit judge to have bail set on the murder charge.
