AWENDAW — A retired biologist from the Lowcountry was recognized by the federal government Wednesday for his career spent helping preserve and protect endangered species.

Tom Murphy, who is retired from the state Department of Natural Resources, was honored during a ceremony at the Avian Conservation Center.

Murphy received the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service's Endangered Species Recovery Champion Award. It honors his work to preserve alligators, bald eagles, brown pelicans, wood storks, and sea turtles.
