COLUMBIA -- South Carolina school and civic groups are organizing a rally at the Statehouse against further education cuts.

The rally on April 14 is sponsored by various groups, including the state School Boards Association, the Palmetto State Teachers Association and the Association of School Administrators. The rally has been dubbed "Enough is enough."

The recession has led to deep budget cuts in education and other state agencies.

Teacher layoffs have been worse than the state Education Department originally estimated. The latest count from districts shows there are 1,400 fewer teachers statewide this school year compared with last.

More layoffs are expected for the upcoming school year.
