Letter carriers will pick up food donations Saturday in their annual Stamp Out Hunger drive.

The U.S. Postal Service will gather nonperishable items left beside mailboxes to locally stock the Lowcountry Food Bank. The best items to donate are canned meats, vegetables, soups, pasta, peanut butter, rice and cereal.

Stamp Out Hunger is the nation’s largest one-day food drive. Working with the Lowcountry Food Bank are the National Association of Letter Carriers, the USPS and Food Lion.

Food Lion Feeds donated a truck full of food — some 10,000 pounds — to the food bank Thursday to kick off the drive. The grocery chain also provided bags for placing donations at mailboxes.

The food drive comes at a time when demand peaks in the summer months as children are out of school, according to the food bank. All donated food stays local to help neighbors who experience hunger in the community.
