The Post and Courier has launched a new app that will allow readers to get the latest news on their BlackBerry devices.
The free application features local news, weather, features, politics, business and sports updates from postandcourier.com.
It also comes with a "You Report" feature that allows users to send tips directly to the newsroom staff.
The app, available through BlackBerry App World, is just one of several apps The Post and Courier has developed and plans to develop, according to Zach Payer, director of Interactive Business Development for Evening Post Interactive.
The newspaper in April launched an app for the iPhone and iPod Touch, which also can be used on the iPad. Payer said apps for the iPad and the Android, Nokia and Palm smartphones are all in development. Each device has different development requirements and will have different launch dates, he said.
The newspaper also has a mobile site at http://m.postandcourier.com.
"We are aggressively developing new apps and mobile sites," Payer said. "It's something the whole organization is involved and engaged in."
The iPhone app has been downloaded more than 4,500 times since its launch. The Blackberry app already has been downloaded 900 times, he said.
"The communities we serve are asking for information on multiple devices and in multiple formats," Payer said. "Based on local and national studies of consumer patterns, we expect that need to increase dramatically in the near future."
Anyone with ideas on how to enhance the application is asked to e-mail comments to firstname.lastname@example.org.
