A stranger leaning out of a red or burgundy Jeep Cherokee has grabbed women or young girls in at least three incidents in two North Area cities as if he were trying to abduct them, police said.

In one instance, he asked a woman about sex.

Police are circulating a sketch of the suspect, described as white with blond hair, about 6 feet tall and 165 pounds with blues eyes, freckles and a military-style haircut. The man reportedly cruises in a Cherokee with black molding.

North Charleston and Hanahan police have taken reports on the man and shared notes. Both agencies are looking for him.

North Charleston police said that about 7 p.m. Friday, a man in a red Jeep approached two cousins, ages 12 and 7, as the girls were riding bicycles near Fernwood Street and Deerwood Drive. The man driving the Jeep opened the door, grabbed the older girl by her jacket and told her, "Come here," according to a police report.

The girl broke free, and her 7-year-old cousin began screaming, the children told the older girl's mother. They said the man then drove away, the report said.

The girl's mother called police, who help create a composite sketch of the man based on interviews with the girls.

North Charleston police spokesman Spencer Pryor said a similar incident took place on Nov. 10. In that case, 23-year-old Elizabeth Beneke told police she had been walking on Otranto Road when she saw a red Jeep pass her twice.

Beneke said the man eventually pulled up next to her on Salamander Road. Beneke, who was wearing headphones, didn't hear him pull up, but he grabbed her and asked her to name a price for sex. When Beneke told the man she wasn't a prostitute, he grabbed her hair and tried to pull her into the Jeep through the window, according to police.

Beneke punched the man in his temple and ran home through the woods. Her description of the man was similar to that in the Friday incident, and added that the man wore blue jeans, a blue T-shirt and black shoes. Those incidents are eerily similar to what a woman told Hanahan police occurred on Sept. 7. She said a man in a burgundy Jeep grabbed her by her rear end and tried to pull her into his vehicle. The 31-year-old victim told police the incident happened while she was walking on Lake View Drive.

"He leaned out and grabbed her," Hanahan police Lt. Michael Fowler said Monday. He said police searched the area for the suspect without finding him.
