Police: Suspect with hammer made threats

A 24-year-old North Charleston man is accused of using a hammer to bash a glass table, then to threaten a woman during a fight over their child early Tuesday — just days after he was arrested on a charge of assaulting the woman’s sister.

James Terry III of Hackeman Avenue faces charges of kidnapping and criminal domestic violence of a high and aggravated nature. He also faces a count of possessing cocaine base after jail officials reported finding crack cocaine in his rectum during a strip search.

His criminal history shows a conviction for breaking into a vehicle or tank where fuel is stored, for which he was set to serve probation until April 2014.

He also has past convictions for burglary, marijuana possession, third-degree assault and battery and criminal domestic violence, according to the State Law Enforcement Division. He was arrested in 2007 on a charge of assault and battery with intent to kill, but the count later was dropped.

The situation Tuesday unfolded about 3 a.m. when Terry arrived at the woman’s home on Florida Avenue and argued with her about his visitation of their child.

When the argument got heated, Terry grabbed a hammer that the 24-year-old woman had been using to hang photographs and smashed a glass tabletop, according to an incident report from the North Charleston Police Department. Glass shards cut the woman’s chest, the report stated.

Terry then bashed a bathroom sink and refused to leave, the woman told the police. He took her cellphone, grabbed her hair and dragged her to his white Pontiac Grand Prix, the report stated. He threatened to use the hammer against her if she didn’t comply with his wishes, she told investigators.

For the next three hours, she rode in the car with him. She was dropped off at her home around 7 a.m., but she didn’t call the police until 11:30 a.m. because she was scared, she told officers.

In front of investigators, the woman played some of the 35 voice mails that featured a man talking about his “baby” and saying he would “get my gun and end this,” the report stated.

She feared Terry wouldn’t stay in jail long because his mother is a bail bondswoman, she added.

On the most recent charges, Terry remained in jail today in lieu of $110,000 bail.
