North Charleston police are searching for a man accused of shooting another man early Friday over an unpaid debt.

Jerod Swinton, 29, of North Charleston is wanted on a charge of assault and battery with intent to kill, according to Spencer Pryor, public information officer for the police department.

Police responded to the 5600 block of Craig Street about 1 a.m. and found Simon Simmons with a gunshot wound, Pryor said.

Simmons told police he and Swinton were leaving the area when Swinton pulled out a handgun and shot him.

Simmons said the suspect shot him because he owed him money.

Charleston County EMS took Simmons to Medical University Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Swinton is about 5-foot-7, 170 pounds with black hair and brown eyes.
