Police say man arrested was getaway car driver

Police officers arrested a 24-year-old man Tuesday morning after they said he drove a getaway car for two people who mugged and shot at a pedestrian in West Ashley.

David Michael Coleman of Lochaven Drive faces a charge of armed robbery, but the Charleston Police Department still is looking for two people in connection with the incident on Parkdale Drive.

The men were described as black, between 20 and 40 years old, between 5 feet 7 inches and 5 feet 9 inches tall, and between 185 and 200 pounds.

Charles Francis, spokesman for the department, said the 39-year-old victim was heading to a family member's apartment home at 415 Parkdale Drive, which is between the Stono River and U.S. Highway 17. About 1 a.m., two men came up from behind and knocked him down. The robbers took the victim's cellphone and wallet containing about $200, according to the incident report.

Francis said the robbers then jumped into a Honda Civic driven by a third man. Getting into his own vehicle, a Cadillac, the victim followed the suspects' car to Castlewood Townhouses off Savage Road, where two of the robbers got out of the Honda and fired a shot at the victim's Cadillac, according to the report.

After the two robbers ran away, the victim continued to follow the vehicle to the Lowe's home-improvement store at 3125 Glenn McConnell Parkway, where the victim called for help. Officers arrested the driver, who they say was Coleman, in the parking lot.
