A man riding a bicycle and carrying a handgun was arrested this afternoon near Huger Street in downtown Charleston.

Charles Francis, spokesman for the Charleston Police Department, said an officer received information about a man with a gun around 4 p.m.

“They spotted the suspect on a bicycle,” Francis said of responding police officers. “He got off the bicycle, dropped the gun and took off running.”

Officers caught the man behind 76 Stuart St.

The man’s identity and possible criminal charges were not immediately available.
