North Charleston police are investigating an early-morning shooting on Spruill Avenue.

Police met with Absalom Thomas at his North Charleston home about 2:05 a.m. Monday. He had been shot in the abdomen, according to Spencer Pryor, public information officer.

Thomas told police he was walking on Spruill Avenue near McMillan Avenue when two black males wearing all-black clothing approached him and asked for a cigarette, Pryor said.

The victim said one of the suspects shot him after he gave them cigarettes. He told police he ran from the scene and reported the shooting to an unknown person who called 911, Pryor said.

Thomas was taken to Medical University Hospital and was last reported to be in stable condition, Pryor said. He said the shooting is under investigation.

A friend who asked not to be identified said Thomas is an accomplished chef and was not one to start trouble.

Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 554-1111. All tips are confidential.
