North Charleston police were dispatched to the City Hall parking lot Monday morning after a taxi driver reported somebody shooting at his cab in the nearby Liberty Park neighborhood.
However, they found no evidence of any shots being fired.
Police received a 911 call shortly before 5:30 a.m. and met with the driver of the minivan-style taxi outside the Mall Drive municipal building.
Officers with flashlights also searched the ground near the reported site of the shooting, a residential area on April Street near Eleanor Drive.
The driver told police he went to the area to pick up a fare when he was approached by two men on a bike, said Spencer Pryor, North Charleston police public information officer.
The man said one came to the driver's side and the other was behind the van, Pryor said. When the driver saw what he thought was a shotgun, he drove off and heard glass breaking on a sliding door.
Officers noted a hole that looked like it had been caused by a hammer, pipe or other hard object, Pryor said. A gunfire-detection system did not record any shots in the area.
