MOUNT PLEASANT -- Police are investigating the abduction of a 4-year-old boy whose father is thought to have taken him without permission to Guatemala, authorities said.
The boy's mother contacted police Wednesday afternoon after his father, 26-year-old Eric Saul Argueta-Carillo, failed to return him to her Pagetree Row home as promised, police said. The boy's parents never married and don't live together, police said.
The mother grew worried after Argueta called her from a Guatemalan cell phone number saying he had taken the child to Guatemala, police said. Police checked cell phone and flight records, notified federal authorities and finally determined Argueta and the boy had indeed traveled to Guatemala City, police said.
Investigators notified the Center for Missing and Exploited Children and plan to talk with prosecutors about the possibility of pursuing a warrant against Argueta for non-custodial abduction, Capt. Stan Gragg said.
