Police: Bakery worker wrests gun from robber

Javier Castro Castillo is charged with armed robbery and attempted murder.

A man who walked into a North Charleston bakery Monday night and robbed a clerk at gunpoint was jumped outside by a bakery employee who wrestled him to the ground until police arrived, according to police reports.

About 9 p.m., police were dispatched to Panaderia Bakery and Superette at 4892-C Ashley Phosphate Road. When officers arrived, they saw two men wrestling on the ground in front of the store. One man yelled "pistola" as police approached, and an officer realized the two men were vying for control of a handgun. The officer quickly got control of the two men and confiscated the gun, according to the report.

Store employees told officers a man had robbed the store by confronting a 26-year-old female clerk with a handgun. The robber fired at the woman one time and walked out with the cash. Outside, an employee who had been in the back room had gone around to the front of the building when he heard the robbery, the reports state.

The robber told police he was carrying his gun and had decided to rob the store, according to the report. The gunman said he also fired at the man who ran out of the back of the store.

According to the report, the robber told officers he had committed the robbery to get money and food.

The money taken during the robbery was recovered. The employee who wrestled with the robber was bleeding from cuts on his head. He was taken to Trident Regional Medical Center for treatment.

In an unrelated incident, the same man who robbed the bakery is suspected of firing a handgun Sunday night at a woman who was driving a car at Saddlebrook Mobile Home Park off Ashley Phosphate Road. The gunman missed and the woman was not injured, according to a police report.

Javier Castro Castillo, 18, who told police he was homeless, is charged with armed robbery, three counts of attempted murder and possession of a firearm by an alien, North Charleston police public information officer Spencer Pryor said.

Castillo is being held in Dorchester County Detention Center pending a bond hearing.
