Jean Stapleton, who played Edith Bunker in the groundbreaking 1970s TV comedy “All in the Family,” has died. She was 90.

John Putch said Saturday that his mother died Friday of natural causes at her New York City home surrounded by friends and family.

The stage-trained actress co-starred with Carroll O’Connor in the series about an unrepentant bigot, the wife he called “Dingbat,” and their liberal daughter and son-in-law.

Stapleton received eight Emmy nominations and won three awards during her eight-year run with “All in the Family.” The CBS series ranked as the No. 1-rated program for an unprecedented five years in a row.

Actor Martin Sheen has an upcoming role in New Mexico — that of mentor at a drama camp for American Indian youth.

The Farmington Daily-Times reported that Sheen will be in the Navajo Nation community of Shiprock this week to help with a local community camp and series of drama workshops. The “Apocalypse Now” and “Wall Street” star will be working with children and adults.

Plans are for Sheen to work with the camp’s drama clinic, which will produce a 45-minute video starring Sheen and the children.

Every year, the Johns Hopkins Center for American Indian Health puts on a summer camp, Native Vision, on tribal lands.

This year the camp will be held at Shiprock High School and the Phil L. Thomas Performing Arts Center in Shiprock.
