Two people were killed in wrecks on Charleston County highways Friday afternoon, but details were sketchy about both incidents.
Shortly after 3 p.m., a 58-year-old Florida man was killed in a three-vehicle collision on U.S. Highway 17 at the Colleton-Charleston county line, said Charleston County sheriff's Capt. Jim Brady.
A pickup truck towing a trailer was traveling south when it passed another vehicle and jack-knifed, causing the trailer to strike an SUV. The pickup truck and trailer then crossed the median and struck a car that was driving northbound, Brady said.
Charleston County Deputy Coroner Bobbi Jo O'Neal said the driver of the car, Rodney Gause of Ocala, Fla., died at the scene. His wife, a passenger, was injured, Brady said.
The second fatal wreck took place on Betsy Kerrison Parkway on Johns Island about 4:30 p.m., Brady said. It was a single-vehicle collision and one person was killed.
The identity of the victim was being withheld until relatives could be notified, O'Neal said.
