The Berkeley County Sheriff's Office has identified the people involved in a shooting Sunday at the William H. Dennis Boat Landing at Tail Race Canal but has not explained the circumstances of the incident or why the investigation was turned over to the state.

According to a Sheriff's Office incident report, when deputies arrived at the boat landing around 5:45 p.m. for a report of a shooting, they found 40-year-old George H. Knowles, of Summerville, with "a hole in the stomach about four inches to the left of the belly button."

Knowles' wife, Michelle, told deputies "that guy shot my husband" and pointed to 67-year-old Jimmy Levi Crawford, who raised his hand and told a deputy that he wasn't going anywhere, the report states.

Both men were taken to Medical University Hospital, Knowles for treatment of the gunshot wound and Crawford for chest pains.

The Sheriff's Office said Sunday that Crawford is the father of a state Department of Natural Resources agent. The investigation was turned over to the State Law Enforcement Division.

SLED Communications Director Jennifer Timmons said Sunday that the DNR officer related to Crawford was not present during the incident and said SLED was trying to learn what precipitated the shooting.
