A 21-year-old man told Charleston County sheriff's deputies he was standing alone near the bar inside a nightclub when someone shot him in the pelvis early Tuesday.
Deputies responded to a reported shooting at 1:10 a.m. at Charley O's at 4224 Dorchester Road, Maj. John Clark said.
Security officers told deputies that someone set off a firecracker inside the club. As deputies dispersed the crowd, they were told by dispatchers that a gunshot victim was taken by private vehicle to the Emergency Room at St. Francis Hospital. He was later taken to the Medical University Hospital because of the severity of his injuries.
Jaton Edwards of North Charleston told deputies he wasn't talking to anyone when he heard a gunshot and felt a pain in the pelvic region, according to an incident report.
A female witness told investigators she saw a silver-colored handgun near the victim but didn't have any information about a suspect.
Clark said the victim was shot with a small-caliber handgun.
Deputies don't have a motive or a suspect at this time, Clark said.
